Design Your Own Utopia: Students design their own utopias, but they must be realistic in terms of how its citizens will survive. They may be required to identify harms within our society and explain how their communities solve those problems. Their utopias may be created in groups and can be presented orally or in essay form. This may be an individual writing assignment as well.
Themes Chart: Provide a chart listing the themes you wish to emphasize during the course. Students complete the chart by providing sections of the novel that explore each theme. This chart can be used as an organizational guide for any essays requiring students to write about a theme.
Research: Writing courses can use Slant of Light as a way to show how students can conduct research that will enhance their reading of the text. The “Interdisciplinary Studies” section provides lists of possible research topics that fall under a variety of categories.
