For Teachers

My friend Alexis Engelbrecht-Villafane, who has an impressive background as an English teacher, has created this teacher's guide for those who would like to use Slant of Light in their classes.

I have had some conversations with college instructors who are using it at that level, and it appears to work very well! For high school teachers, our recommendation is that it be used as a choice selection rather than required reading, since the adult situations, depictions of violence and sex, and offensive language from some of the characters may make it unsuitable for some high school readers. In advanced classes, however, the book has had much success engaging students with the big themes of human frailty and ambition, hypocrisy and idealism, and the place of humanity in nature, as well as giving them a rich entry into the historical setting of pre-Civil War America and the social issues that were prominent at the time.

If you choose to use any of these materials in your classes, please credit Alexis Engelbrecht-Villafane. The MLA documentation form would be
